Often times one of the biggest challenges we face or have faced in this job is/are irregular surfaces spotting a lot of misdemeanors, and one of the most costly {do it Yourself} mistakes is trying to paint over a Damp Surface or a surface having one or more irregularities.

Before we dive in to decimating damp surface  paintings let us bridge a little on wall/surface irregularities .

What is a painting surface:

In a layman tongue, a painting surface is any interaction that can absorb and retain paints; this interaction is usually between a pallet/paint brush and a hard surface that can retain these paints.

Some say you can paint on anything but I chose to be specific, because no matter how eager and zealous you may be, you can never be able to paint on water.

There are a whole lot of different painting surfaces available but for want of space we would talk about (8) eight  most common, and before I proceed to list them out,  it would be worthwhile to remind you that these painting surfaces can also be referred to as “supports” in the Painting world and the different varieties of supports are;

  • Canvas
  • Patterned fabric
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Wood and Composite pallets
  • Silk
  • Metal
  • Glass
  • Building walls. (you can add yours)

I purposely listed out building walls to get back your attention on what I was talking about, there may be varieties of supports, but the one support we are focusing on today is the building wall.

Now what are the defects present in building walls that need to be taken care of before paint application is done.

For buildings in the African region which are Predominantly Cement walled, a failure in Uniform plastering could become a “support” issue.

Damp or leaking Walls;

Another major problem of supports is damp and leaking walls, this is the main aim of this Article and we would still dissect this effectively.

Poor surface preparation:

Another Vital factor that Affects supports in Painting industry is the aspect of Poor preparation of surface before action.

A support maybe completely okay but still needs to be professionally prepared before any paint can come on it, this is to be able to give the consumer the desired result. (Check our showerspaint Journal on wall Preparation for more).

How to solve Damp Surface Problems

  • Use of damp Proof/ Anti Condensation Paints:

Do Anti Condensation paints exist? Well yes, they do exist, and they contain insulation materials and these materials improve the thermal performance of surfaces it’s applied to. It can reduce wetness on walls and associated mould if condensation was caused by a cold surface.

Can it be trusted for taking care of Damp surfaces? This depends on what causes the dampness. If this is as a result of a wall leak, where the dampness continually grows then anti condensation paints would never work.

But if the dampness is as a result of atmospheric condensation which mainly may not be popular around Africa.

The only sure method of taking care of Damp Walls is by taking care of the actual cause of the Dampness, this gives a longer life time to whatever paint done on the support.

Once you are in a “Do it yourself” situation and You need to Paint, first ensure that your Supports are well taken care of because supports have the strength to make or mar a Painting job.
